Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress and Tiara

The world witnessed the Wedding of the Century yesterday. And, the most talked about subject was the Wedding Dress of Kate Middleton or shall we call Her Royal Highness Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

She looked absolutely stunning! Her wedding dress was something every girl would dream of! As many did speculate, her beautiful dress was designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen’s. The long and sheer veil, the hand embroidered sleeves, and about 6 feet long train – everything about the dress showcased a mix of tradition and modernity.

And, talking about her wedding dress, how can we not talk about the tiara. The tiara that Kate wore is the famous Cartier’s Halo Tiara of queen, borrowed for this special occasion. It was actually made in 1936, and Queen’s Father King George VI (remember The King’s Speech) gifted Queen’s Mother three weeks before he took over the throne. Gifted to the Queen on her 18th birthday.

Set with baguette cut old diamonds, and with its floral formations, the tiara looks absolutely gorgeous. The diamond earrings that Kate wore on this special day were gifted by her parents and were specially designed to complement the tiara.

Natural Colored Diamonds – What are they?

When I wrote my last post about Jennifer Lopez’s 14-carat blue diamond ring, I realized colored diamonds remain mystifying gemstones to many. And while natural colored diamonds are more and more seen making an appearance on the red carpet adorning our favorite celebs ... Diamonds are more or less commonly perceived to be colorless and probably that is why colored diamonds were even thought of as synthetics.

So here is a quick overview of what colored diamonds actually are ..

Colored diamonds can be interpreted as a beautiful adulteration of nature. Diamond in its purest state would be made up of all carbon atoms and such diamond would be colorless and transparent. However, such diamonds are very rare; often certain chemical impurities become a part diamond’s crystal structure and thus imparting it various colors.

Most diamonds that are used in jewelry have yellow and brown tints. While these are the most common colors, diamonds come in a wide hue of colors such as blue, orange, pink, black, red and even green. As the color becomes more prominent, these rocks are termed as fancy colored diamonds. There are about 300 various shades and hues of diamonds that have already been identified.

Fancy colored diamonds are very rare, thus they come with a price tag which can make anyone gasp. But then, not all fancy diamonds are outrageously expensive, black diamonds and brown diamonds can be given their relative abundance can be bought at decent prices.

Colored Diamonds aren’t a new Concept

Given the recent limelight that natural colored diamonds have got, many believe that these fancy diamonds are some new concept. But, it is so not the case. Natural colored diamonds have been in existence for as long as diamonds have been known. The ancient Golconda mines of India, which are the oldest diamonds mines in the world.produced some of the finest and the largest blue and pink diamonds including hope diamond, koh-i-noor, darya-i-noor.

Ekati Spirit Diamond from Canada sets a New Record

A 78- carat diamond rough that was recently mined from the Ekati mine, Canada was sold this week at the BHP Billiton’s diamond center, Antwep for $2.8 million. This rough diamond of $2.8 million sets a new record and becomes the most expensive rough diamond from a Canadian mine. The previous record was set by 10.22 carats diamond rough which was sold for $1.2 million.

The stone is internally flawless and the most significant gem quality produced from this mine in the last 13 years. However this is not the biggest diamond discovery of the Ekati mine, the biggest was the 182 carat diamond which was found about 2 years ago, but it was of poorer quality.

There are no reveals on who the buyers in, but one can’t help but wonder hoe this stunning gemstone would looks once it is cut, given some fancy shape and set in some magnificent jewel :))

Bejeweled baby skull worth $50 Million

Here is a bejeweled baby skull that is causing much controversy in the UK. This latest work of Damien Hist has a real baby skull covered with diamonds in platinum. This sculpture that Hist has entitled ‘For Heaven’s Sake’ is the follow up to $100 million skull which he presented in 2007.

The skull is believed to be of a new born of less than two weeks from 19th Century. The skull in cast in all platinum and with more than 8000 white and pink diamonds by Bentley and Skinner Jewelers. The Diamond skull will be showcased at Gagosian Gallery, Honk Kong this month.

There have been many protest regarding using the baby skull to which Hist replied as "When you look at a skull, you think it represents the end, but when you see the end so beautiful, it gives you hope.”

Christie’s Pink Diamond at $1 Million per Carat

The world suddenly seems to in a fix with Pink Diamonds. Just few days back Sotheby’s 24.78 carats pink diamond set a new record when it was sold for $46 million.

And here is another purple-pink diamond, this time from Christie’s which grabbed a mind boggling price. This 6.89 carats was sold at $6.91 million (about $1 million per carat).

The stunning cut – cornered modified rectangular shaped diamond is set with pink diamonds in rose gold ring.

Sotheby’s Pink Diamond Ring sets a World Auction Record

Sotheby’s 24.78 carats pink diamond ring is sold for $46 million and has set a world record for any diamond or other jewel sold at auction. The diamond is a Fancy Intense, Emerald cut and given its huge size, is exceptionally rare piece.

Prior to the sale, the diamond was estimated to be scoring between $27 - $38 million. To even this estimated price many experts in the industry claimed to be over estimation of its actual value.

But now the ring has set a record, Sotheby’s sure must be happy!
